Simon Heller, CEO
As the CEO of Orion, Simon’s ethos is centred on the Latin phrase ‘Nil Sine Labore’ translated as ‘Nothing without labour’.
Simon founded Orion in 1998, originally specialising in commercial and domestic heating and began trading in 1999. Due to client demand and an excellent reputation, Orion expanded its services to include air conditioning, plumbing, electrical and water hygiene. As a result of the expansion, Orion’s name changed from ‘Orion Heating Services’ to ‘Orion Building Engineering Services’ in 2012.
Prior to Orion, Simon completed his apprenticeship with Eastern Gas, now British Gas. After qualifying, he remained with Eastern Gas for 4 years. He then worked for several other companies and gained experience working on different plant, including a London based company Planned Maintenance Engineering Ltd, predominantly specialising in commercial heating. He was a combustion engineer and worked for them for 12 years.
Scarlett Cruger, Senior Manager
Scarlett Cruger joined Orion Building Engineering Services Ltd as a Senior Manager in 2018. Alongside her General Manger duties, she also leads the Water Hygiene division. She oversees day-to-day operations, including management of the Orion team and all water hygiene projects. Through her time at Orion, Scarlett has gained proven leadership expertise in operations, contract management, and staff development, making her a valuable asset to Orion. Scarlett holds a variety of qualifications from Prince 2 Project Management, Business Management and certified advanced Autodesk qualifications. Scarlett is fluent in English and Afrikaans.
Amasha Varnasooriya, Junior Project Manager
At Orion, graduate project manager Amasha Varnasooriya is responsible for controlling budgets, negotiating subcontractors and providing day-to-day communication with the team to ensure jobs remain on schedule and within budget. Amasha is a recent graduate of the University of Lincoln, where she earned her Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Mechanical Engineering. With a focus on sustainability, Amasha has a background in design, manufacturing processes, dynamics and vibrations in engineering structures.
Amanda Broom, Compliance Officer
Amanda has been with Orion since 2015 as an Office Manager and has recently taken on the role of Compliance Officer. She ensures that Orion complies with its outside regulatory requirements and internal policies by implementing and managing an effective legal compliance program. Working closely with our external UKAS accredited Auditors, Amanda makes sure our accreditations are maintained, renewed and adhered to. Amanda’s aim is to reduce non-compliance, help the company manage risks and maintain a positive reputation. Prior to joining Orion, Amanda’s previous experience includes, Office Management, Facilities Management and various Director PA roles.
Gaynor Smith, Accounts Assistant
Gaynor has been working at Orion for 3 years as an Accounts Assistant. After raising her family, Gaynor decided to go back to school and studied for her AAT qualifications. She has over 20 years of experience working in various accounting roles; ranging from general practice to large corporate companies. As an Accounts Assistant at Orion, Gaynor is in charge of all aspects of the financial procedures and clerical tasks. Gaynor’s motto in life has always been “Happy to help”.
Stephen Dean, Engineering Manager
With over 40 years of experience, Stephen began his career at British GAS in 1977. He then completed an apprentice where he continued on as a GAS service engineer until 1988. Furthermore, Stephen has also trained as a commercial gas and oil combustion engineer on planned maintenance engineering. He has also worked at Carillion Engineering Maintenance Services and Maracom Limited, before joining us at Orion in 2015. As an engineering manager, his duties include day-to-day reactive maintenance programmers, offering technical support, managing and supervising other engineers.
Emma Stratton, Office Administrator
Emma comes from an engineering background of studying Motor Vehicle Engineering for 3 years. Emma worked in hospitality before moving onto to working for OPRO, where she worked within the logistics department and general management. At Orion, Emma works within the service and maintenance department, where she carries out business administrative duties to ensure the office processes run smoothly. She assists and reports to senior management, and is also responsible for coordinating, planning and scheduling tasks, and providing support to our engineers. Outside the office, Emma enjoys playing the piano and bass, and has a good knowledge of reading music.
